Nineteen-year-old Wynton Marsalis' self-assured debut on Columbia announced a major newcomer in jazz, one that would become the voice of the genre for a generation. That Marsalis idolized mid-'60s Miles Davis is evident from the backing group, which includes Davis' sidemen Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams. On some tunes, he's supported by a pack of Young Lions including pianist Kenny Kirkland and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts. Nothing here is visionary, but the trumpeter's potential is impossible to miss. Listen for the interplay between Wynton and brother Branford on "Hesitation."
