What counteracts that depressive tug downward is the buoyant bliss of pop: Songs like "Down in the Dumps" and "Shut Up and Dance" leaven indie melancholy with buzzing, glistening beats and cascading harmonies. Highlights: the twinkling come-on "Sidekick" and the synth washes and clean birdsong guitars of "Aquaman," the band's neatest bulls-eye on the glowing sound of their '80s forebears.
