Gravadora: Hardly Art
Protomartyr's droning barrage isn't as metal as their name or album cover imply, but few bands backing out of Detroit garages these days sound so noisy. In the post-Husker Du '80s Midwest, though, they'd have fit right in; Homestead would've signed them for sure. They've got the same post-punk Anglophile reference points popular then -- Joy Division, Bunnymen, The Fall. Joe Casey's baritone feels jaded even when muffled, and "Tarpeian Rock" and "Bad Advice" are shrewd Mark E. Smith imitations, spitting out cranky epithets at "emotional cripples," "credit card users" and "smug urban settlers."
